Jorge Lopez Signs with the Cub

he Chicago Cubs have signed former Mets reliever Jorge López to a minor league contract, according to the Cubs' MiLB transaction website. The Athletic was the first to disclose the signing.

Lopez's Controversial Outburst

On May 29, after being ejected in the eighth inning of a 10-3 defeat to the Dodgers, López, 31, threw his glove into the Citi Field stands, sparking leaguewide outrage.

Following the game, there was more debate. Lopez told reporters he did not regret his reaction. His words sparked even more confusion after he was reported to have dubbed the Mets "the worst f------ team in the entire MLB," but he then clarified he had meant to imply he was the "worst teammate in the whole f---- MLB."

Post-Game Confusion

It was unclear whether López said worst "teammate" or worst "team" in MLB. He then told a team member that, as a natural Spanish speaker, he meant to say both. However, on Instagram the next morning, López criticized the media for "making it worse," claiming that he had always stated "teammate" instead.

"Whoever hear me I said 'teammate' and what I said on the situation I (have) been the worst teammate thanks media for making it worse," he stated.

Following the outburst and postgame media session, the Mets designated López for assignment, thus cutting relations with the reliever.

López's Performance and Cubs' Bullpen Needs

López has played 28 major league games for the Mets this season. He has a 3.76 ERA over 26.1 innings pitched. He's struck out 19 batters and walked 11.

The Cubs are in severe need of bullpen help this season, ranking 24th in the MLB with a bullpen ERA of 4.47.
