The Sixers made a huge move in the NBA draft on Wednesday night, selecting Duke sharpshooter Jared McCain with the 16th overall choice. The 20-year-old guard enjoyed an outstanding freshman season at Duke, averaging 14.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
A Dynamic Scorer
McCain is recognized for his high-energy play and exceptional shooting abilities. During his time at Duke, he shot 52.1 percent on two-pointers, 41.4 percent from beyond the arc, and 88.5 percent from the line. His performance in the NCAA tournament was particularly notable, with two 30-point games, including an 8-for-11 showing from three-point range in Duke's victory over James Madison.
Offensive Versatility
While McCain's shooting is his most impressive skill, his offensive game is diverse. According to Sam Vecenie of The Athletic, McCain "uses the threat of his shot as well as any player in the country" and is skilled at driving to the basket. Though he is not anticipated to be the primary ball handler, McCain is skilled at running pick-and-roll plays and has a low turnover rate. He also thrives in transition, looking for opportunities to shoot on the open floor.
McCain stood 6-foot-2 without shoes and weighed 203 pounds during the NBA draft combine. Despite his aggressiveness on the boards, there are worries about his defensive abilities in the NBA, specifically his ability to guard several spots successfully. However, Sixers head coach Nick Nurse has a history of using diminutive guards, which might help McCain's absorption into the club with Tyrese Maxey.
McCain's enthusiasm
After being picked, McCain spoke with ESPN's Monica McNutt about his joy and commitment. "Just somebody who wants to achieve any goal he sets out to. A hard worker. I'm going to do anything I can to bring home a championship, bring home wins in general. I'm so happy to be here," he told me.
McCain is the Sixers' first first-round choice since 2021, when they selected Jaden Springer 28th overall. The Sixers traded for De'Anthony Melton with their 23rd pick in 2022, leaving them with no picks in 2023. They also have the 41st pick on Day 2 of the draft, which starts Thursday at 4 p.m. ET.
