Tuesday night, the major league-leading Philadelphia Phillies held off the slumping Chicago Cubs 6-4 thanks to two big home runs by Trea Turner.

The Phillies were comfortably ahead 6-1 when the Cubs entered the ninth inning and started to stir things up. When José Ruiz entered the game, Cody Bellinger and Michael Busch both reached base on singles before Seiya Suzuki crushed a three-run home run. After that, Jeff Hoffman walked Ian Happ and Christopher Morel to earn his eighth save by getting Dansby Swanson to retire on a line drive to right.

In his debut major league start, Michael Mercado (1-0) earned his first career victory in five innings of two-hit ball. And Hoffman closed it out for a Phillies team playing without injured sluggers Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.

Turner took over after Garrett Stubbs' two-run double in the second gave Philadelphia a 2-0 lead. With 15 multi-homer games under his belt, he made it 5-1 against Hayden Wesneski in the fifth inning with a booming two-run drive that lined the opening pitch of the third to roughly the tenth row of the bleachers in left-center. In the seventh inning, the two-time All-Star added an RBI single.

In his second appearance of the season, Mercado gave up one run. The right-hander, 25, walked two and struck out four batters. Before Ruiz got into trouble, Gregory Soto, Orion Kerkering, and Yunior Marte each pitched a flawless inning.

Wesneski gave up five hits and five runs in five innings of work. In his fifth start of the season and his 22nd appearance overall, the right-hander struck out seven and walked three. Right fielder Nick Castellanos robbed Bellinger of an extra-base hit in the first inning with a fantastic backhanded catch as he crashed into the ivy. Castellanos then hit an RBI double in the third inning.
