Since the summer league began, the Los Angeles Lakers have had serious offensive difficulties. This is especially noticeable in the play of Dalton Knecht, their first-round choice. The Tennessee rookie guard has struggled to establish a rhythm in the California Classic at Chase Center, losing two straight games.
Unpredictable Performances by Dalton Knecht
In 22 minutes, Knecht finished with 12 points, one assist, and two rebounds in the 92-68 loss against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday. His poor shooting performance persisted as he only made three of his thirteen field goals and one of his three baskets from beyond the arc, with the majority of his points coming from the free-throw line.
This was a repeat of his performance the day before, when he scored 12 points in a defeat to the Sacramento Kings while shooting three for 12 from the field and one for four from three-point range. Knecht acknowledged that he needed to get back into his groove and adapt to the NBA game after not playing a complete game since March.
Knecht is still confident in his shooting skill despite his difficulties. "Shooters shoot," Knecht declared. He underlined the significance of getting to his places and making shots, projecting confidence each time he fired a shot. "My dad always told me the next one is going in, so shoot."
Knecht had a poor start, but in the second half he picked up the aggression and took more shots as the Lakers used him to create opportunities for the offense. His two-handed dunk and disputed layup that turned into a three-point play were impressive displays of his athleticism. Still, he was unable to make many shots, and he finally missed the fourth quarter.
From the Coach's Perspective
Coach Dane Johnson of the Lakers summer league highlighted Knecht's development with patience, understanding that it will take some time for him to adjust to the NBA level. Johnson gave Knecht credit for his shooting prowess and voiced optimism about his future achievements. "He's a great player, so I'm not worried about him making or missing some of these shots. He's going to knock down shots going forward," Johnson stated.
Before traveling to Las Vegas for the NBA summer league, the Lakers are slated to play the Miami Heat on Wednesday.
